The last few months have been a traumatic affair. Redemptions, irritating regulatory returns, the death of exit strategies, a demise in leverage, an explosion in health and safety legislation, a lack of alpha and a general gnawing away by the media. My hedge fund lifestyle is being challenged from all angles.
Having written this newsletter every business day for over 2 and half years - more than the expected life of an average hedge fund - my brain has had enough. Readers from the start know I have a love of fishing, a desire to become a monk and a yearning for spiritual enlightenment.
So here is the deal. For the next 4 weeks, Finbar Taggit is going away. Everything is being turned into Euros. His staff alerted. Spam filters looking forward to a respite. Having examined a number of lifestyles, his chosen route is that of the Kabbalah so beloved of the great and the good - including Madonna. He will be enjoying a residential course in New York where the joys of life will be expounded and his wallet emptied of a few dollars.
He may blog but this is unlikely. For those in need of a Fintag fix, can I point you to the archives? These contain many of the same rants and opinions and lots of gossip that have subsequently become true. Trawling through the repeats can be as cathartic as experiencing the daily newsletter.
But let's not get maudlin. It has been fun seeing the number of readers expand from a handful to tens of thousands. The comments bewilder me and the emails tell me things that I shouldn't be party too. [Editor: Great. I get a 4 week holiday too] And the great thing is I will be back. Refreshed. Enriched. And ready to put the world to rights.
Be good.

I think Finbar will be using the Beauchump Hedge Fund Autopilot function to manage his portfolio while he's away.

Taleb deserves credit for writing a book that explains statistical inference and probability theory to the general public. However, it is wrong of him to claim credit for concepts that academics and many risk managers (for that matter) have recognised for decades. Also its easier to talk about these concepts than make money out of them. He has made loads out of selling books but nothing out of running moeny!

Albourne's alright for hedge fund info. Depends what you are after. For what it's worth I think the new NakedHedge.com website is pretty much the best hedge fund resource out there.
